Labour Hitting The Ground Running

Peter Morris

July 17, 2024

I can fully get my head around a new Government wanting to make an immediate impact. New broom and all that. Labour say they have 'hit the ground running'. Well there's no doubt about them hitting the ground - face first.

In just one week they have poked the bear in Russia by providing Ukraine President Zelenski with sophisticated missiles, and okayed their use to be fired directly into Russian territory and thus possibly therefore provoking WWIII.

Then a few days later backpedalling and saying no, they can't be used to fire directly into Russia.

Prime Minister Starmer has also guaranteed providing Ukraine with £3 billion a year for as long as it takes to defeat Russia. For what? To buy more cannon fodder people to fight and die? Pretty soon Ukraine will run out of fighting age men.

Then of course we have the absurd Ed Miliband. He's immediately stopped any further gas or oil exploration in the North Sea. Equally immediately causing job losses of highly skilled people in Scotland and sparking potential legal challenges in the courts by the exploration companies involved who have already invested millions into the projects.

Miliband wants to kill all gas and oil produced in this country in the forlorn hope of being 'green'. This is all prior to having any lasting or reliable solution for an alternative. Windmills, solar panels and batteries are not the answer. All of them are weather dependent.

No wind, no energy, too much wind, no energy. No sun, no energy or much reduced energy. These methods are ridiculous in that the electricity generated 'has' to be used straight away. Sunshine in the summer? At a time when we don't need to heat our homes and consumption is much reduced.

Ah! Batteries! Let's store the energy in batteries. Nope, that's impractical, the space needed is huge and the number required would be depleted in a very short time. Also with batteries there is huge risk from fire. It would take months for them to finally burn out. You can't extinguish them. I've seen that with my own eyes, on a smaller scale.

You can't recycle all those windmill blades, you can't do anything with the millions of tons of concrete for the foundations. The shelf life of a windmill (note: I'm not calling them wind turbines or any other fancy names, they're windmills) is something between 10-20 years max. Then he has approved the use of 'on-shore' windmills.

Anyone want them in their back yard? No, nor me.

Then there's solar panels covering thousands upon thousands of acres of prime farmland, stopping us from feeding ourselves. 'No farms No food'. Oh, and incidentally 'spent' solar panels can't be recycled either, contain toxic chemicals and are manufactured in China.

Then we get to coal, which we have in abundance. The only coal mine being prepped for production has been stopped. Yet to Miliband that's hitting the ground running.

Face first.

Then we have the prison crisis. Yes, you can blame the Tories all you like, and I'm not defending them. But releasing prisoners early is not the answer. Remember, they are there for a reason, even in these days of controversially lax sentencing (which we're all aware of). Blame the Tories all you like but it's Labours problem right now. Why bother with a judiciary at all, if you're just going to let them back out after only serving 40% of their 'time'.

Sit back and have another hard think! I'd suggest deporting all the foreign criminals and all their families. Yeah, I know that's fraught with problems too. I'm sure if you had a nice word with Russian President Putin he could find an uninhabited corner of Siberia to ring-fence them for safe keeping.

I've probably missed many other idiotic decisions Labour have made in their very first week. Can anyone say they fully support all of these? I think they're all idiotic, and if that's the calibre of what's to come, God help us.

I'm glad I'm old!
